As a regular visitor to the beach over the past three years, I've come to understand what works time and time again. While I love a good pair of vintage denim cut-offs and one-piece swimsuits are a big hit this summer, this four part formula is easy to wear, flattering and will take you from the beach to the bar. Just add a pair of slip on espadrilles and a good book!
1) Cotton tunic, preferably with tassels or lacing at the front which has that cool 70's vibe and is everywhere this year. A tunic also covers you from intense rays, is easy to get on and off and doesn't leave any unwanted marks on your skin. Look out for ones with a rope-tie belt if you feel the need to cinch yourself in. This one (pictured above) by Innika Choo, falls mid-thigh, has voluminous sleeves, embroidery and shoulder smocking. Making it pretty darn lovely and very on trend.
2) An eye catching bikini. This is really flattering, with boning and optional neck tie, especially for those with a small to medium bust. The scalloped edging and stripes also make it both on trend and classic. Which helps justify the price (sort of).
4) The perfect pair of sunglasses will never go out of fashion. This Celine pair are pricey but they are a true classic and are very flattering. Toms do a very similar pair with a lower price tag so take a look there too.
All you need now is a cocktail to get yourself into a holiday state of mind. My personal favourite, especially while in the Caribbean, is the rum based mojito. I recently had a sage and pineapple version - one of the best cocktails I've ever had - at The Cliff Beach Club - a truly stunning and ultra cool bar and restaurant right on the sea in the parish of St James on the west coast. If you're heading to Barbados it's really worth a visit.
